We’re just a couple weeks away from it officially being summertime and what a joy it is being in the beautiful state of Michigan to enjoy the bounty of activities underneath the sunshine. Of all the summer activities out there, enjoying a drink outdoors is a staple for a midwesterner and Rivertown Market has got you covered when planning your next outing. Michigan is well known across the country and in some parts of the world for its bounty of breweries and distilleries, especially northern Michigan, where a majority of this industry takes place. There are whole tours and events revolving around Michigan’s craft breweries and distilleries. This blog post is going to feature three local purveyors that represent Michigan fondly.

EASTERN MARKET BREWING COMPANY

Our first feature for this month’s blog will be Eastern Market Brewing Company, a community focused brewery in the heart of Detroit’s Eastern Market. Founded in 2017, EMBC has already solidified themselves as one of the top dogs within the neighborhood. Known for hosting live music and other events, this brewery is also creating some of the best beers and ales you could find within Detroit. On top of creating their own signature brews, Eastern Market Brewing Co. features many local craft breweries that would be hard to find elsewhere. Everything is done in small batches and features many local small farms to create a hyper local product, EMBC has been known for their innovative and diverse offerings, like their flagship beer “Elephant Juice”. They’ve expanded its brand with Ferndale Project, an experimental brewing company, and Elephant & Company, a Detroit style pizza and sports bar eatery.

Following Eastern Market Brewing Company, our next feature is Kozi Vodka, a Detroit distillery that embodies the essence of Polish identity and passion. Known for their exceptional quality and smooth texture and mouthfeel, Kozi Vodka is perfect for any cocktail or mixed drink, and for the purists out there, perfect on its own or over ice. Poland not only created vodka (wódka), but has also perfected it time after time again, Kozi has taken that rich history and culture with them to create this deceivingly simple spirit. Kozi crafts their vodka with the finest winter wheat along with pristine artesian water to create the base ferment before distillation. Kozi is a premium spirit that is priced fairly and intended to be enjoyed by all. DETROIT CITY DISTILLERY

Our final feature will be another Detroit based purveyor, Detroit City Distillery is a fairly new distillery making big waves in the scene. Eight childhood friends came together to make alcohol the old fashioned way, and revive the scene of distillers that Detroit once had. Detroit City Distillery creates small batch artisanal whiskey, gin, and vodka using the finest local ingredients sourced directly from farms in Michigan, with the goal of sourcing as close to the distillery as possible. This hyper local distillery really showcases not only the terroir of our lovely state but the skill of the distillers themselves and the passion they have for crafting these timeless spirits. The distillery has a tasting room located in Detroit’s Eastern Market, and you can find their fine spirits at Rivertown Market as well.
